4. Making the Most of the Checkdown with Blocking
Effective blocking can turn a simple checkdown into a significant gain. The key is to have receivers, linemen, and tight ends setting up screens or downfield blocks for the RB or short receiver after the catch.
Screen Pass Design:
A screen pass is a perfect way to make the checkdown even more effective. As the QB drops back, the offensive line "pulls" and sets up blocks while the RB catches the ball behind the line of scrimmage. With blockers in front of the RB, they have a better chance of breaking tackles or turning a modest gain into a larger one.
Outflank the Defense:
If you notice the defense overcommitting to the middle or another area of the field, you can use the checkdown to outflank them. This could involve releasing the RB quickly to the flat or even throwing a quick swing pass to the sideline where the defense is thin, making sure your blockers are there to help.
